Bespoke software for complex operating environments.

A boutique consultancy working across Australia and the UK: fifteen years inside Australian energy, and a London platform delivered in 2012 and still under our hand today. We build the forecasting, reporting and process-safety systems operations teams run on — and keep them running for years afterwards.

§01 — Capability

What we are engaged to do

Ad-hoc capability alongside your existing team, or full ownership of a system end to end.

01

Custom software development

Tailored platforms built for performance, security and adaptability. Full lifecycle under agile delivery — discovery, architecture, build, test, documentation, deployment.

02

System uplifts and modernisation

Legacy platforms carried into modern, maintainable architecture without stopping the business that depends on them. Cloud migration verified against as-built behaviour.

03

Integration and API development

Connectivity between legacy systems, cloud services and third-party platforms. REST and SOAP services, message queuing, distributed data extraction.

04

Business intelligence and reporting

Centralised reporting solutions, data pipelines and workspace delivery — including Power BI for executive views over systems we have built.

05

Project governance and management

Engineering, data and software delivery, change management and stakeholder engagement — including running discovery and putting a phased roadmap in front of leadership.

06

Post-delivery support

Hypercare through production go-live, and the capability to support a product for its lifetime. Several of our systems have been in service for over a decade.

AGL

Principal consultant
Hydro scheduling & optimisation

Hydro Optimisation — discovery and roadmap

Ran the discovery across AGL's hydro scheduling and optimisation environment, working directly with their technical people and operational specialists. The binding constraints turned out to be architectural rather than functional: a monolith that made change slow, specialist tooling aimed at the wrong problems, gaps in the surrounding ecosystem, and no real plan for getting anyone to adopt something new.

  • Findings and a phased roadmap presented to AGL leadership, each phase able to stand on its own.
  • Incumbent platform was considered good enough, so a short discovery sprint was proposed as the way in rather than arguing for replacement.

2022—2026

Origin Energy

Principal software developer
Generation & LPG operations

Process Safety Insights (PSI)

Upgraded the earlier Process Safety Dashboard into PSI, then extended it out of generation and into LPG operations as Origin widened the scope. Sole engineer on the platform through to the final component, deployed August 2026.

  • React front end over a containerised Docker back end, replacing an earlier Fargate approach.
  • Asset and hazard dashboards, KPI metrics and governance reporting.
  • Power BI integration for the executive view.

2022—23

Origin Energy

Principal software developer
Generation & Development

Asset Intelligence Reporting System (AIRS)

Built for the Information and Data Management team: at its core a data collation and correction tool, pulling operational data together from across the generation fleet and giving the people who understood it a way to fix what was wrong before it reached anything downstream.

  • Master data trigger intervals so records were reprocessed on the right cadence rather than a fixed schedule.
  • Data processing extended to feed operational budgets.
  • Refactored to AWS CDK, which became the prototyping base for web applications in XEnergy.
  • Led the 2023 migration of AIRS and Scenario Forecasting onto Origin's new AWS environment across dev, pre-prod and production — and verified both behaved as before.

2022—23

Origin Energy

Principal software developer
Generation & Development

Scenario Forecasting

A sandbox for generation facilities: model a scenario against a plant, see what it does to the forecast, and use it to plan maintenance before something fails rather than after. Delivered across phases and sprints under an agile arrangement with Origin, through to Phase 2 Sprint 5 in late 2023.

  • Period-based forecasting with flexible intervals, forecasting penalty factors, end-of-life and event costing.
  • Deployed and tested for Shoalhaven.
  • Owned application structure, code architecture and system documentation as the tool grew.

2017—19

Origin Energy — Integrated Gas

Senior software engineer
APLNG network

Carbon Reporting Solution

Replaced the NGER reporting spreadsheet with a database-backed calculation engine covering the contributing gas fields in the APLNG network, normalising monthly emissions from MCDB, MPM and OPSDB.

  • Measured, calculated and estimated figures kept as distinct categories.
  • Audit trail allowing any historic submission to be reproduced from source data.

Vantage Point Systems

Systems architect, later technical architect
London

Reporting and data aggregation platform — London

Succinct’s first international engagement, delivered from Brisbane for a London client in 2012: a hosted service aggregating data out of client financial systems over web services, generating documents and distributing them automatically. It turned a profit inside its first month of trading and has been a commercial success for the client ever since — sold on to their customer base, in daily use across those accounts, and still generating revenue fourteen years after go-live. Fourteen years, one engineer, no rewrite.

  • Returned as technical architect to redesign the web application and the remote jobbing system across multiple data sources.
  • Further integration and distributed data extraction added; most recent go-live January 2026.
  • Continuously in service since 2012 with no rebuild: uptime, data volumes and client base all grown against the original architecture.

§04 — Practice

How the work actually runs

A.

Grounded in your vision

Strategic guidance on the development roadmap, delivered transparently. You see the plan, not a black box.

B.

Modular design thinking

Flexible systems that support iterative improvement and rapid deployment, rather than one big-bang release.

C.

Documented to the same standard

Architecture, quality standards and external-facing technical documentation are part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.

D.

Long engagements, not transactions

Clients come back across multiple ventures. Several systems here have run for a decade or more under the same engineer.

E.

Hypercare at go-live

Close support through production cutover, then ongoing capability to support the product for its lifetime.

F.

An extension of your team

External, ad-hoc delivery capability without the overhead of a large vendor — and no account manager between you and the person building it.

§05 — Principal

Benjamin Snelling

Founder and principal consultant

In industry 25 years
In AU energy 15 years

Software Engineer and Solution Architect, twenty-five years in the industry — earlier ones in London and Edinburgh, the last fifteen in Australian energy. Succinct has been running since 2009, working through long engagements with Origin Energy, AGL and a UK client of fourteen years as principal engineer.

These are systems owned end to end rather than pieces contributed to. The Asset Intelligence Reporting System and Scenario Forecasting for Origin's generation business, the Process Safety Insights platform now running across generation and LPG operations, and the carbon reporting engine that replaced their NGER spreadsheet were all designed, built, documented and kept running from here. Most have been in production for years.

Delivery leadership as well as build: took over the development group at Energy Information Systems in 2014, owning quality standards, architecture and technical documentation, and has managed subcontractors on client engagements since.

§06 — Contact

Carrying a system nobody wants to touch?

Tell us what it does, what it runs on and what it is stopping you from doing. You will get a reply from the person who would do the work.
